I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier
August 12, 2008 at 2:36 pm | In PBS | 1 CommentSo Nike is airing a commerical with this refrain by The Killers. I wouldn’t have known who sang the song but for Google and this blog post. Lyrical Wisdom I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier
The refrain and guitar part (chords? melody? I’m not much of a music person, so I don’t know what to call it) really bring to mind “Carrier,” the 10 part PBS series about life aboard an aircraft carrier. PBS Carrier The opening montage of the series uses the same song with great shots of the boat and the sailors aboard. See it here on YouTube I can’t hear this song now without thinking about aircraft carriers.
This is true reality television at it’s best. It’s real people living real lives telling real stories about what it’s actually like out there on an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf. I’ve seen some of the episodes 2 or 3 times and I never get tired of hearing the stories (though some are more serious than others). I love that the sailors on this boat that figured out their lives weren’t going anywhere at home and joined the Navy as an opportunity to do something better with their lives. Some of them like the Navy and some of them don’t but at least there is a way for people out there to better their lives if they so choose.
One of my favorite sailors is Phil, and this is the quote I have at my desk from Phil: “I go to work every day regardless if I’m sick or not. I do my job whether I like it or not. I try my best, whether I want to or not.” Also, the pitching deck episode where multi million dollar jets are trying to land on the moving boat pitching around in the ocean in the dark “is Carrier,” as one of the pilots put it.
